Grand Stable and Carriage Building

The Grand Stable and Carriage Building is a horse stable with a cast iron facade in Italianate style located on SW 2nd Avenue in downtown Portland. The structure was built with quality materials and stands next to another historic commercial building from 1894.

A wealthy businessman named Simeon Gannett Reed commissioned this building in 1887 and hired architect Warren Heywood Williams to design it. The project was built during a period when Portland was expanding rapidly and many transportation businesses needed new facilities.

The building shows how wealthy business owners of the 1800s housed their horses and carriages with care. It reflects the prosperity that transportation entrepreneurs enjoyed during that era.
