Willapa Bay, Estuarine bay on the Pacific coast of Washington, United States.

Willapa Bay is an estuarine bay on Washington's Pacific coast, sheltered from the ocean by the Long Beach Peninsula. The body of water covers a large area and is shaped by tidal movements that constantly shift water levels throughout the day.

European settlers called it Shoalwater Bay in the 19th century, a name that appeared on period maps and charts. The region eventually took the name Willapa, which became the accepted designation for the area.

The bay has shaped life for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, who gathered fish and shellfish from its waters. This deep connection to the place remains important to local communities and their traditions.

The water stays cool year-round and supports extensive oyster farming, which shapes the local economy. Visitors should be ready for tidal changes that can affect access to different areas around the bay.

Much of the bay consists of tidal flats that dry out at low tide and flood again as waters rise. These dramatic tidal swings create specialized habitats found nowhere else in the region.
