Shelton stands at the westernmost point of Puget Sound, covering 6.09 square miles of land and water at an elevation of 7 meters.
The land belonged to the Squaxin Island Tribe until 1854, when it was ceded through the Treaty of Medicine Creek before incorporation in 1890.
The Simpson Timber Company mill on Oakland Bay represented the city's connection to the logging industry until its transfer to Sierra Pacific Industries in 2015.
The Shelton School District maintains eight educational facilities, ranging from elementary to high school level, serving the local student population.
Ridge Motorsports Park opened in 2012 as a racing venue, hosting national events including MotoAmerica and Trans-Am Series competitions.
