Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, Public aquarium in Sidney, Canada

The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, formerly the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, is a not-for-profit aquarium and learning centre on the Sidney waterfront, Vancouver Island. Its three levels occupy the ground floor of the Sidney Pier building, where tanks hold 87 tonnes of seawater. Coast Salish artist Charles Elliott designed graphics reproduced throughout, and a fish sculpture marks the entrance.

The centre opened in 2009 as part of the Sidney Pier development, succeeding the earlier Marine Mammal Museum and Marine Ecology Centre. This merger brought together different marine education initiatives under one roof.

Coast Salish elders Tom Sampson, Earle Claxton, Ray Sam and John Elliott advised the centre on Salish Sea traditions and First People's relationships with marine life. Coast Salish artist Charles Elliott created graphics reproduced throughout the centre and in the fish sculpture at the main entrance.

The centre occupies three levels on the ground floor of the Sidney Pier building, where concrete structural walls shape the layout of the tanks. The floor was reinforced to carry 87 tonnes of seawater. An outdoor tide pool in the waterfront park on the east side of the building is freely accessible.

The centre's name honours a $2.5 million gift from the Shaw Charitable Committee, the largest single donation to the $5 million Discover Your Ocean campaign that ran from September 2006 to April 2009. The building itself was a town-owned gift: 930 square metres of ground-floor space in the Sidney Pier development, leased to the society for 2009 to 2029.
