Annacis Island, Industrial island in Delta, Canada
Annacis Island sits between the north and south channels of the Fraser River and hosts manufacturing plants and a wastewater treatment facility for Metro Vancouver. The island functions as an industrial zone with factories and infrastructure facilities spread across its surface.
The island takes its name from Noel François Annance, a Hudson's Bay Company employee involved in establishing Fort Langley in 1827. It later became home to Canada's first industrial park, created in 1955, which shifted the land from agricultural use to manufacturing.
The British Columbia Institute of Technology maintains a campus on the island, providing specialized technical education and training programs.
The Alex Fraser Bridge connects the southern portion of the island to Delta, while additional bridges link to Richmond and New Westminster. Access is available by road, making it easy to reach by car from surrounding areas.
The island holds Canada's first industrial park, established in 1955, which fundamentally reshaped the region's economy. This shift from agriculture and fishing to modern manufacturing left a lasting mark on local development.
