Greater Vancouver, Metropolitan area in British Columbia, Canada.
Greater Vancouver is a metropolitan region in southwest British Columbia that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Coast Mountains. The area includes several independent cities and municipalities along the shores of Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River.
The regional district formed in 1967 as Fraser-Burrard Regional District and changed its name to Greater Vancouver Regional District one year later. In 2017 the organization adopted the name Metro Vancouver to better reflect its coordinating role.
The population of 2.6 million residents includes substantial communities of Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian, and European backgrounds across multiple municipalities.
The region is connected by a shared transit network, though each municipality maintains its own local services. Visitors typically move between different communities using public transport or by car.
The metropolitan area contains both dense urban neighborhoods and forested mountain slopes that border directly on residential districts. Several mountain peaks within the regional boundaries are often snow-covered in winter while coastal communities experience mild weather.
