Sunset Beach, Beach on English Bay in Vancouver, Canada
Sunset Beach is a sandy beach in Vancouver, running along Beach Avenue between Bute Street and Thurlow Street, with views over English Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A shared path along the shore connects it to the Vancouver Aquatic Centre nearby.
The waterfront area was once used for industry and port activity before urban projects turned it into a public space for recreation. This change was part of a broader effort to open Vancouver's shoreline to residents and visitors.
Sunset Beach is one of the main gathering spots for the Celebration of Light fireworks competition, when teams from different countries put on shows above the water each summer. On those evenings, the shore fills with people sitting on blankets and watching the sky together.
The beach is easy to reach on foot from downtown Vancouver and sits close to the West End neighborhood, making it one of the most visited spots on warm days. Coming early is a good idea, especially in summer or during events, as the shore fills up quickly.
In 2021, a large cargo barge was pushed onto the beach by flooding and stayed there for several months before being removed. The grounded vessel drew many onlookers, which was an unusual sight for this stretch of shoreline.
