Boeing Field, Public airport in King County, United States
King County International Airport is a public airport in Washington state with two paved runways covering roughly 257 hectares. The longer runway measures about 3,050 meters (10,000 feet) and handles daily traffic from cargo planes, private aircraft, and military jets.
Construction began in 1928 and the facility served as the main airport for Seattle until 1944, when the new international airport south of the city opened. After that, the field evolved into a center for cargo operations and test flights for the local aviation industry.
The field takes its name from the aviation company that has operated here for nearly a century and still uses much of the facility. Visitors regularly watch newly built aircraft take off for the first time from the nearby factory buildings.
The airfield lies south of downtown and is easily reached by visitors heading to the adjacent aviation museum or watching aircraft movements. The best views of takeoffs and landings are from the museum grounds or along roads on the eastern edge.
A museum at the edge of the runway displays the very first jumbo jet ever built and a retired supersonic jet from British service. During summer, the Navy aerobatic team uses the grounds as a home base for performances during the city's multiday water festival.
