South Park Bridge, Bascule bridge in Seattle, United States
South Park Bridge is a movable crossing over the Duwamish River in Seattle with two lifting sections that open vertically. These sections rise upward to let ships and boats pass underneath.
The original structure was built in 1931 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It served the area for over 80 years before being replaced with a new crossing in 2014.
The bridge links different Seattle neighborhoods and industrial zones together. It handles daily traffic for residents, businesses, and river vessels moving through the area.
Pedestrians and cyclists can cross alongside vehicle traffic on the bridge. Expect occasional delays when the lifting sections open to allow boats to pass through.
The original crossing suffered serious damage from the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and received a low safety rating that forced its closure. This disaster ultimately accelerated the decision to build a replacement.
