Marra Farm, Community garden in South Park, Seattle, United States
Marra Farm is an agricultural space spanning roughly 9 acres in the Duwamish River Valley that community members tend together to grow organic produce for local residents. The land includes individual garden plots, shared growing beds, and a dedicated section for the Mien community, with volunteers working on-site throughout the year.
The Marra family operated this land as a commercial vegetable farm from the early 1900s through the 1970s before it was sold to King County. The site was later transformed into a community-run garden where residents continue to grow food for themselves and their neighbors.
The Mien community garden section grows traditional crops that hold meaning for its residents, who maintain agricultural practices passed down through generations. Visitors can observe how these methods continue to shape the way people cultivate and share this land today.
The site is open on Wednesday through Friday when volunteers are present and people can join in activities. Plan to visit in the morning hours and wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, since gardening work is hands-on and involves soil.
This farm sits in the Duwamish River Valley, a region with deep industrial roots that today is being restored for conservation and community projects. It demonstrates how former industrial sites can be transformed back into productive farmland where neighbors grow food together.
