Goleta Beach, Public beach in Santa Barbara County, United States.
Goleta Beach is a public beach in Santa Barbara County, southern California, set within a coastal park that has picnic and grilling areas, volleyball courts, showers, and a paved path for cycling along the shore. A long wooden pier extends over the water and is used by both anglers and people out for a walk.
The area was originally a natural sandbar used by the Chumash people before European settlers arrived in the region. In the 1940s it was developed into an organized recreation area and has been managed by the county ever since.
Goleta Beach sits next to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, and students mix with families and local residents throughout the day. The place has the feel of a neighborhood gathering spot rather than a tourist destination.
The beach offers free parking, and beach wheelchairs are available on request for visitors who need them. Grilling stations and other equipment can be reserved in advance, which is worth doing on weekends and holidays when the park fills up.
The pier at Goleta Beach is one of the few publicly accessible fishing piers on the Southern California coast where no fishing license is required to fish from the dock itself. This makes it one of the rare spots where someone can pick up a rod and fish without any prior paperwork.
