California's 25th congressional district, Congressional district in Southern California, United States
California's 25th congressional district is an administrative area in Southern California covering all of Imperial County and parts of Riverside County, including cities such as Cathedral City, Indio, and El Centro. The landscape shifts between densely settled communities in desert valleys and wide agricultural zones along the Colorado River.
This congressional area was created in 1953 through redistricting in California and underwent many boundary changes to reflect demographic shifts. Edward Roybal represented the area from 1975 to 1993, while other sections of the region gained new political alignments.
The name comes from its numerical position in California's congressional representation, while the area is home to Hispanic and Latino communities working in agriculture and commerce. On weekends, markets in towns such as Coachella fill with families buying fresh produce and sharing regional specialties.
The main towns in the area sit along Highway 111 and Interstate 10, so travelers can use both routes to reach the communities. Summer heat above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) makes visits easier in spring or fall when temperatures are milder.
The area sits partly in the Mojave Desert climate and stretches to the border with Arizona, where the Colorado River forms the natural dividing line. Fields of lettuce, carrots, and dates shape the landscape, as irrigation canals turn the dry land into farmland.
