Fresno Yosemite International Airport, International airport in Fresno, United States.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport is an international airport in California, located in the San Joaquin Valley and serving as the central gateway to nearby national parks. The terminal extends over a large area with check-in counters, baggage halls, and waiting zones, while two parallel runways handle daily flight operations.
The site served as an air force base called Hammer Field starting in 1942 and was released for civilian aviation after the war ended. The renaming to Fresno Air Terminal took place in 1946, but military presence remained through the stationed fighter squadron.
The baggage claim hall displays large replicas of Sierra Nevada giant sequoias, creating a first impression of the forests between Fresno and the mountains. Visitors also see historical photographs of early expeditions into the region, illustrating the connection between city and wilderness.
The terminal offers rental car stations directly at the exit and connections to the city bus network, which provides rides to downtown Fresno. The access roads lead from here eastward to the mountain passes that guide to the national parks.
The airport houses a wildfire fighting unit alongside scheduled flights, whose water bombers regularly take off to missions in the Sierra Nevada during summer. Military fighter jets use the same taxiways as passenger aircraft and are occasionally visible on the apron.
