North Las Vegas, Growing metropolitan region in Clark County, Nevada, United States
North Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada, that spreads across a wide desert valley and divides into several residential and commercial zones. The streets follow a grid cut by wide main arteries, while low single-story buildings and scattered multi-story complexes shape the skyline.
Thomas Williams purchased a large tract of land in 1919 and founded a settlement here, supported by farming and water sources. The place officially incorporated as a city in 1946 after residential areas and small businesses had spread.
The settlement takes its name from its position north of the older neighboring city and grew from several independent communities. In the neighborhoods today, a strong Latin American presence shows through local businesses, restaurants, and weekend gatherings in public spaces.
Buses connect the different neighborhoods and continue into surrounding communities. Interstate 15 runs north to south through the area and provides quick access to neighboring regions.
During the 1920s, while prohibition ruled elsewhere, the area drew visitors because local alcohol bans did not apply here. That period shaped the informal nickname Old Town, still used in some neighborhoods today.
