Sunrise Mountain, Mountain summit in Clark County, Nevada
Sunrise Mountain is a desert summit east of Las Vegas, Nevada, covered in rocky slopes and loose terrain. The trail to the top passes through open, sun-exposed ground and involves climbing over boulders and navigating steep sections.
During World War II, the US military placed an airway beacon at the top to guide aircraft flying over the region. The structure was taken down in the decades that followed the war, though traces of its foundation remain.
At the top, remnants of the old wartime beacon structure are still visible to those who look closely. Local groups are pushing to protect this area, along with nearby Gypsum Cave and Frenchman Mountain, as a national monument.
Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential, as the ground is uneven and the sun hits hard in the desert. Starting early in the morning or waiting until late afternoon helps avoid the peak heat.
The rock face exposes ancient limestone that formed at the bottom of a prehistoric ocean, long before the desert existed. These layers are visible to the naked eye and show how completely the landscape of this region has changed over time.
