Munds Mountain Wilderness is a protected forest area in Arizona with varied elevation zones and dense tree cover. The terrain features steep slopes that rise through different forest types, creating a layered landscape of forest and open ridges.

Munds Mountain Wilderness was designated a federal wilderness area in 1984 under the Arizona Wilderness Act, which added roughly 18,150 acres of Coconino National Forest southeast of Sedona to the National Wilderness Preservation System. The designation ended road building and motorized use, leaving the land managed by the U.S. Forest Service as roadless terrain.

Indigenous peoples have left traces of their presence across this land over many centuries. Walking through the terrain, visitors can encounter remnants that speak to the deep human connection with this forest.

Bring plenty of water and navigation tools when exploring this area, as both are essential for safe travel. Water sources in the wilderness are limited, and the terrain can be confusing without proper maps or a guide.

The wilderness takes its name from Munds Mountain, and the national topographic map divides the area between the Munds Mountain and Sedona quadrangles. From high points of the Hot Loop Trail over Horse Mesa, hikers can pick out Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Sycamore Pass and Woods Canyon.
