Supai, Census-designated place in Coconino County, Arizona
Supai is a small settlement deep inside the Grand Canyon in Coconino County, Arizona. The village covers roughly 1.72 square miles and sits at around 3,200 feet (975 meters) in elevation, surrounded by red rock walls and streams.
The Havasupai people have lived in this canyon for centuries, using the year-round water flow for their fields. In 2008, severe flooding caused damage and led to the temporary evacuation of residents.
The name comes from the Havasupai people, whose territory still includes the surrounding waterfalls and canyon walls. Visitors meet a living community that keeps its language and way of life while welcoming travelers from around the world.
Access involves an eight-hour hike from Hualapai Hilltop, including steep slopes and sandy trails. Alternatively, visitors can book a helicopter ride that is much faster and offers views of the canyon landscape.
The post office receives letters and packages through a mule train that descends the steep trail several times a week. A special freezer in the post office building stores perishable food items that arrive this way.
