Colorado City, Town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States.
Colorado City is a town in Mohave County, Arizona, sitting at an elevation of 1517 meters (4977 feet) in the northern part of the state with a desert climate marked by hot summers and mild winters. The small community consists of scattered properties with simple homes spread along unpaved roads, surrounded by dry vegetation and open land.
The founding took place in 1913 as a small settlement for families who deliberately turned away from urban life and sought a remote area. Over the following decades the community grew slowly and developed into a recognized municipality within the administrative boundaries of Mohave County.
The settlement takes its name from the nearby river that forms the border with Utah and once provided water sources for early settlers. Some residents today still maintain traditional gardens and home construction following older patterns that differ noticeably from modern standards.
Visitors should bring sufficient water and supplies, as shops and services are very limited. The unpaved roads can become difficult to navigate during rain, so a vehicle with higher ground clearance is recommended for approach.
In 1953 the state of Arizona conducted a large police operation targeting several families, which attracted nationwide attention. These events shaped the public perception of the community for many years and led to legal debates about religious freedom and state intervention.
