Red Lake Peak, Mountain summit in Alpine County, California, US.
Red Lake Peak is a mountain summit in the Sierra Nevada range, located in Alpine County, California. It sits at around 10,040 feet (3,061 meters) and features exposed volcanic rock near the top, with forest and alpine meadow covering the lower slopes.
In 1844, explorer John C. Fremont and Charles Preuss completed what is recorded as the first documented ascent of an identifiable Sierra Nevada peak here. Their climb was part of a broader expedition to map the western territories of North America.
The peak draws hikers and climbers who come for the open views across the surrounding ridges and the mix of rocky terrain along the way. The trail passes through forest and then opens into alpine meadow, giving the route a clear sense of transition.
Between November and May, a parking permit is required to access the Meiss Meadow SNO-PARK area, and it can be obtained through the California State SNO-PARKS website before the trip. At this elevation, weather can change quickly, so proper footwear and enough water are worth packing regardless of the season.
The mountain has two separate climbable summits, both made of volcanic rock, which is less common in a range where granite tends to dominate. Depending on the route chosen, the climb can range from a straightforward hike to sections rated Class III or IV.
