Mokelumne Wilderness, Nature reserve in Calaveras County, United States.
Mokelumne Wilderness is a nature reserve spanning three national forests with elevations ranging from 1,200 to 3,160 meters (4,000 to 10,380 feet), topped by Round Top Peak. The landscape features lakes, creeks, and mountain ridges set against a rugged terrain.
Protection for this land came through the Wilderness Act of 1964 and expanded further under the California Wilderness Act of 1984. These two designations shaped how the area is managed and preserved today.
The name comes from a Mi-Wok Indian village that once stood along the Mokelumne River in California's Central Valley. This connection to the land's first inhabitants remains part of how people understand the place.
Overnight permits are required year-round from the national forest administering your entry point, as different sections have different requirements. Check ahead to understand which office issues permits for your planned route before going.
The area sits where three different Sierra botanic zones meet, creating unusual ecosystem variety over short distances. This mixing creates homes for black bears, mule deer, and California spotted owls in the same space.
