Horsetail Falls

Horsetail Falls, Waterfall in Desolation Wilderness, California, United States.

Horsetail Falls is a waterfall in Desolation Wilderness that drops about 241 meters down a steep granite cliff, splitting into multiple streams that flow across the rock face. The cascade grows much larger during spring snowmelt, when water volume increases noticeably.

The waterfall is located within Desolation Wilderness, which became protected land under the Wilderness Act of 1964. This protection ensured the landscape and its water sources would remain in their natural state for the future.

The falls serve as a central point for nature photographers and hikers who gather each spring to document the seasonal water flow variations.

The best time to visit is from May through October when snow has melted and trails are accessible. Start early and bring plenty of water and sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain is demanding and the elevation requires good stamina.

The water comes from seven high-altitude lakes including Gefo, Toem, Ropi, Pitt, Avalanche, Desolation, and Lake of the Woods. This network of sources keeps the waterfall flowing steadily rather than becoming a trickle during drier months.
