Horsetail Falls

Horsetail Falls cascades down 241 meters of granite cliffs near Lake Tahoe, creating multiple water streams that spread across the rock face.

The waterfall and surrounding Desolation Wilderness became protected land through the Wilderness Act of 1964, preserving its natural state for future generations.

The falls serve as a central point for nature photographers and hikers who gather each spring to document the seasonal water flow variations.

Visitors need to obtain a wilderness permit at the trailhead kiosk before starting the 3.6-mile round trip hike to reach the waterfall base.

The water source comes from seven high-altitude lakes, including Gefo, Toem, Ropi, Pitt, Avalanche, Desolation, and Lake of the Woods.
