Lake Aloha is a large, shallow water reservoir situated high in California's Sierra Nevada mountains and surrounded by rocky granite peaks. The lake contains clear water that often reflects the colors of the sky and surrounding rocks, and is framed by trees, rock outcroppings, and open natural terrain.
The water reservoir was created in 1875 when a dam was built across Pyramid Creek and flooded a valley. Over the years, the dam was raised and additional smaller dams were added to improve water management for the region.
The lake sits within Desolation Wilderness, a place valued by hikers and nature lovers who have sought refuge here for generations. The peaceful setting encourages visitors to slow down and appreciate the quiet beauty of the mountains.
The lake sits above 2,400 meters (8,000 feet) elevation and can be cool and windy. Visitors should prepare for changing weather by bringing a light jacket, water, and a good map, and should avoid staying too long during sudden storms or rapidly approaching weather changes.
The lake is not naturally occurring but was created by dam construction, which merged several originally scattered natural lakes into one larger body of water. Water levels fluctuate based on management needs, revealing more small islands when levels drop.
