Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park protects a turquoise bay set into Lake Tahoe's eastern shore, bordered by granite walls and thick forests on all sides. The protected area spans about 1,533 acres and includes shoreline, wooded slopes, and rocky peaks that frame the water.

The state established this park in 1953, and it received federal recognition as a National Natural Landmark in 1969. These designations acknowledged the area's unique geological features and ecological importance to the region.

Vikingsholm mansion reflects Scandinavian building traditions and shapes how people experience the shoreline today. The structure shows how architectural styles from elsewhere can become part of a place's character.

The park sits along California State Route 89 with parking near the water and trails ranging from easy walks to steep climbs. Plan for temperature swings depending on the season, and wear layers to adjust as you move between sun and shade.

Fannette Island stands as the only island on the lake and holds a small stone tea house built in the early 1900s. This unexpected structure on a remote island creates a curious moment that many visitors overlook when first exploring the bay.
