Ralston Peak, Mountain summit in Desolation Wilderness, California, US
Ralston Peak is a mountain summit in the Desolation Wilderness that rises to approximately 9,200 feet. The northeast face drops off sharply while the southern approach climbs more gradually, offering different experiences depending on the route taken.
The peak formed during the uplift of the Sierra Nevada millions of years ago. In the 19th century, mining and logging activities brought people to the region and shaped its development.
Native American tribes inhabited the lands around Ralston Peak before European settlers established mining and logging operations in the 19th century.
Access to the summit requires a permit for the Desolation Wilderness, and the hike typically starts from Camp Sacramento via the Ralston Trail. Weather conditions can shift rapidly at this elevation, so visitors should come prepared for changing mountain conditions.
Snow persists on the north face into late spring, while the south side plunges over 2,500 feet within a couple of miles down to Highway 50. This dramatic elevation change creates two completely different environments in close proximity to one another.
