Lake Alpine, reservoir in Alpine County, California, USA
Lake Alpine is a reservoir in Alpine County, California, located at about 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) elevation in the Sierra Nevada. The lake covers roughly 179 acres and was created by a dam on Silver Creek, with several small islands dotting its surface.
Originally called Silver Valley Reservoir, the lake was created in 1892 when the Utica Mining Company dammed Silver Creek to supply water for mining operations in Angels Camp. The area later developed into a recreation destination as summer homes and mountain cabins appeared throughout the 20th century.
The name refers to its location in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Visitors use the area for fishing, boating, and hiking, especially during warmer months.
The lake is easily accessible via California State Route 4, roughly 50 miles east of Angels Camp. A two-mile paved trail circles the lake and is wheelchair accessible, while restrooms are available on-site but visitors should bring their own drinking water.
The Lake Alpine Lodge, built in the late 1920s, collapsed under heavy snow in 1932, leaving only its large stone chimney standing. The building was later rebuilt in simpler form and remains in operation today.
