Sonora Peak, Mountain summit in Sierra Nevada Range, California.
Sonora Peak is a mountain summit in the Sierra Nevada rising to approximately 11,500 feet. The peak displays steep granite slopes with snowfields persisting along its ridges and northern face throughout much of the year.
Paiute tribes traveled through these mountains for many generations, using Sonora Pass beneath the peak as a key trade route. This passage connected regions on both sides of the Sierra Nevada.
The mountain serves as a geographic boundary marker between Alpine and Mono Counties, reflecting California's territorial organization within the Sierra Nevada range.
The best time to hike is from July through September when snow levels decrease and conditions become more stable. The ascent uses marked trails starting from Sonora Pass, with day hikes being the standard approach.
The mountain contains multiple glacial cirques that hold snow through the summer months, creating constant water sources for surrounding alpine areas. This feature makes it an important water reserve for the region.
