Wapama Falls

Wapama Falls is a waterfall in the Hetch Hetchy area of Yosemite National Park where water drops about 1,400 feet down granite cliffs in a powerful display. The water tumbles in stages and creates mist that is visible from a distance.

The O'Shaughnessy Dam was built in the early 1900s and fundamentally changed the landscape of the valley. The reservoir created by the dam submerged the lower portion of the waterfall.

The name comes from the Sierra Miwok people who lived in this valley long before the national park was established. This connection to the land and its original inhabitants remains part of the place's identity.

The trail to the falls is about 5 miles round trip with some steep sections and several footbridges along the way. During peak water flow in spring, expect spray and splash from the bridges.

The water flow stays strong through spring, while the rest of the park attracts far more visitors overall. This means you can witness a powerful natural display without dealing with heavy crowds.
