Ebbetts Pass, Mountain pass in Alpine County, US.
Ebbetts Pass is a mountain crossing through the Sierra Nevada in California where State Route 4 winds through steep switchbacks and narrow sections. The road stretches over 98 kilometers with tight hairpin turns that demand careful driving through steep terrain.
A fur trader named John Ebbetts crossed this mountain route with pack mules in 1851, thinking it might work as a railroad corridor. The pass was later named after him and has remained a key connection between the eastern and western slopes ever since.
The area is known for outdoor recreation that draws visitors to hike, camp, and explore the Sierra Nevada landscape. People come to experience the mountain scenery and natural hot springs that have made this region a destination for nature seekers.
The road is typically closed from November through May due to heavy snow and is impassable for larger vehicles. Trucks or RVs longer than 25 feet cannot safely navigate the hairpin turns and tight sections.
The eastern slope includes very steep sections where drivers must shift into first gear to navigate safely. Blind corners and unexpected turns throughout the route demand slow speed and full driver attention.
