Carson & Tahoe Lumber 1 “Glenbrook”, Historic locomotive at Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, United States.
The Carson & Tahoe Lumber 1, called Glenbrook, is a narrow-gauge steam locomotive with a 2-6-0 wheel arrangement housed at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The engine runs seasonal train rides that showcase the mechanical design typical of late-1800s railroad engineering.
The engine was built in 1875 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Spooner Summit for the Carson & Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company. After nearly 90 years out of service, it returned to operation in 2015.
The locomotive represents the economic link between lumber operations around Lake Tahoe and mining destinations like Virginia City. Visitors see a working symbol of how industries in Nevada depended on each other during the 1800s.
The locomotive runs seasonal rides from May through October when weather conditions are favorable for comfortable visits. The museum in Carson City has outdoor viewing areas where you can walk around and see the engine from different angles.
This is the oldest Baldwin locomotive still in operation anywhere in the United States, built in 1875. Its nine-decade absence from active service makes its museum comeback truly remarkable.
