University of Nevada, Reno, Public research university in Reno, United States.
The University of Nevada, Reno is a public research institution in Reno, founded as a land-grant college offering academic programs across sciences and humanities. Red brick buildings and modern structures sit among green spaces with views of the Sierra Nevada.
The institution began in 1874 in Elko as the state's only college and moved to Reno in 1885 when the city gained a railroad connection. The current name was later adopted to distinguish it from the sister campus in Las Vegas.
The campus houses the Basque Studies program, the only one of its kind in North America, documenting the culture of Nevada's Basque community. Visitors can view photographs, documents and immigration stories at the Basque Studies Center.
The campus lies north of downtown and can be reached by public transit and main roads with parking available. Most public areas can be visited freely, though some buildings are reserved for students and staff.
The campus operates a seismic laboratory with large structural testing tables where engineers can simulate earthquakes on real building models. This facility supports the development of safer construction methods in earthquake-prone regions.
