Mound House, unincorporated community in Nevada
Mound House is an unincorporated community in Lyon County, Nevada, located along US Route 50 between Carson City and Dayton. The settlement sits at high elevation and contains scattered homes, small businesses, and industrial facilities related to mining and mineral processing operations.
The community began in the late 1860s as a tollhouse along a historic road and took its name from nearby gypsum deposits. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad arrived in 1869, establishing a station that became an important transfer point for goods and workers serving the surrounding mining camps.
The area is easily accessed via US Route 50, situated between Carson City and Dayton. The flat terrain with open spaces and scattered trees makes it simple to explore the surroundings and enjoy outdoor activities like walking or cycling.
The settlement was once a crucial railroad hub, but its importance faded after a shortcut to Hazen was built, eliminating the need for trains to pass through. Today, only scattered remnants like an old locomotive turntable survive to remind visitors of this busy industrial past.
