Maison de la canne

Maison de la Canne is a museum in Martinique housed in a former distillery that tells the story of sugar cane production on the island. The rooms display farming tools, production machines, and explain each step from crop cultivation to final processing.

The building was originally a rum distillery founded in 1916 that produced Le Soleil rum until 1962. It was converted into a museum in 1987 to preserve the island's industrial heritage.

The place shows how sugar cane shaped daily life on the island and left marks in local customs and practices. The displayed objects tell stories of the work involved and how this industry influenced the community.

The museum sits between Les Trois-Îlets and Rivière-Salée and opens on different days with varying hours. It's wise to check opening times before visiting, as they can change seasonally.

The grounds span about two hectares and still contain original industrial machinery from the old production era. The site received recognition as Musée de France in 2003, reflecting its importance in preserving this industrial past.
