Cultural Centre of Firminy-Vert

The Cultural Centre of Firminy-Vert is a modern building that extends about 110 meters along an artificial cliff face in a former quarry. The structure uses three stacked levels, with spaces for music, theater, visual arts, and dance arranged at different heights.

The building was designed by architect Le Corbusier and completed in 1965, making it the only structure he finished from the Firminy-Vert development project. The complex is part of a larger urban masterplan that was meant to transform the region during the 1960s.

The center reflects the artistic diversity of its era, with separate spaces dedicated to music, theater, visual arts, and dance that show how creativity was organized in the 1960s. The rooms are arranged so that different artistic practices can exist alongside each other and enrich one another.

The center is open from Monday through Sunday and provides access to rotating exhibitions and events. Visitors should note that different areas may be available at different times, so checking ahead is recommended if you plan to see specific activities.

The south side of the building displays a large fresco depicting the various arts practiced within. The innovative roof system uses suspended steel cables to support concrete slabs, a structural solution that was uncommon for its time.
