Château de la Mercerie, Renaissance castle in Magnac-Lavalette-Villars, France

Château de la Mercerie is a castle with Renaissance and neo-Gothic architectural elements located in Magnac-lès-Gardes, France. It stands out for its large stone facades, numerous windows, and a blend of European building styles realized throughout the 20th century.

Two brothers, Raymond and Alphonse Rethore, acquired the estate in 1924 and started building it as their vision of a grand European palace. The construction project halted in 1970 due to financial difficulties and was never completed.

The castle reflects the builders' desire to create a grand European residence by combining architectural traditions from across the continent. Walking through it, you can see how this vision shaped every choice, from the stonework to the window placements.

You can visit the castle during summer through guided tours, with off-season visits available by reservation. Check ahead about opening times since they change depending on the season.

The castle became known as 'Charente's Versailles,' a name reflecting its ambitious yet unfinished construction. This comparison reveals just how grand the founders' ambitions were for the property.
