Moulin à huile de La Wantzenau

The moulin à huile de La Wantzenau is an oil mill preserving multiple pressing devices from different periods side by side. The building houses an old nut grinder with millstones, an entirely wooden oil press, and an additional wine press.

The mill was built in 1764 and operated as a shared facility for nearby communities until 1939. During this time, it processed walnuts, hazelnuts, rapeseed, and other crops into various oils.

The mill reveals traditional production methods through its preserved rooms where nuts and oils were processed by hand. The visible machinery shows how workers once extracted oils using methods that required skill and careful attention.

The mill sits in a quiet area of La Wantzenau and is most easily accessible during annual Heritage Days events. It helps to check in advance when such events take place, as regular opening times are limited.

The nut grinder still operates using animal power, revealing how the mill originally functioned. This working mechanism preserves a direct link to the craft production of earlier centuries.
