George Carter Whitmore Mansion
George Carter Whitmore Mansion, Historical residence in Nephi, United States.
The George Carter Whitmore Mansion is a three-story residence with a domed turret, red sandstone foundation, and rounded side porch set along Main Street. The exterior displays decorated shingles, finials, and carved wooden panels characteristic of its architectural period.
Wealthy banker George Carter Whitmore built this mansion in 1898 during a period of economic growth in Nephi. The house was completed as he expanded his business interests and later served in the state senate from 1900 to 1908.
The house displays Eastlake and Queen Anne style elements with oak finishes, leaded glass windows, and intricate wood carvings that reflect late 19th-century design preferences. Visitors can observe the decorative woodwork and ornamental shingles throughout, which were typical of prosperous homes built during this period.
The mansion is located on South Main Street in downtown Nephi on the western side of the commercial district and is easily reached on foot. It stands visible from the street, and the area provides convenient parking for visitors exploring the neighborhood.
The front entrance steps display sandstone walls with 'Colonial' and 'Villa' carved into them, a rare detail on an American private residence. These inscriptions reveal the owner's aspirations and cultural ideals reflected in the property itself.
