Église Notre Dame-de-Nazareth de Monteux, Listed historic monument and church in Monteux, France
The église Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth de Monteux is a listed historic monument in the center of Monteux, a village in the Vaucluse department of southern France. The building has thick stone walls, a prominent bell tower, and several side chapels arranged around the main nave.
The church traces its origins to the mid-14th century, when the Antonine fathers gave the people of Monteux a small chapel that gradually grew into a larger building. After damage during the French Revolution, the town had the roof covered with a plaster vault in 1827.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Nazareth, a patronage common across Provence. Inside, visitors find a plain interior with a wooden altar and few religious images, giving the space an open and uncluttered feel.
The church stands right on Monteux's central square and is easy to reach on foot from the village center. A visit is worth planning around the annual organ festival, when the building opens for concerts.
The 19th-century roof framework is so rare in the region that it was the main reason the building was listed as a historic monument in 1992. The current facade is also a reconstruction from the 1920s, set back a few feet (about a meter) from the original position to reorganize the space in front of the church.
