This is the Place Monument

This is the Place Monument, Bronze and granite monument in This Is the Place Heritage Park, Salt Lake City, United States.

Description

This Is the Place Monument is a bronze sculpture installation on a granite base situated within a 450-acre park in Salt Lake City. The detailed figures depict pioneers, explorers, and settlers who played roles in establishing the Salt Lake Valley region.

History

Constructed between 1939 and 1947 by sculptor Mahonri M. Young, this monument commemorates the arrival of Mormon pioneers in Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. It replaced earlier markers on the site that had been erected decades before to mark the same historical moment.

Culture

The monument depicts various historical figures important to the community, including Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, whose roles shaped the region's development. Visitors can observe how these individuals are represented in bronze, gaining insight into who was valued in the founding narrative.

Practical

The monument sits at the foot of the Wasatch Range near Emigration Canyon, with views of surrounding ridges and valleys. The site has open paths for walking and is straightforward to reach, whether approaching from above or entering through the park grounds.

Did you know?

The site was marked by temporary wooden signs and stone markers for decades before the final bronze installation was built. This gradual evolution shows how the community's commitment to honoring the moment grew stronger over time.
