Fietsen door het Water, fietspad in België
Fietsen door het Water is a bike path in Genk that crosses a pond via a 212 meter long and 3 meter wide track. The route runs nearly level with the water surface, so cyclists find themselves surrounded by water on both sides during this short section.
The bike path opened in April 2016 and quickly became a well-known destination. The adjacent De Wijers nature reserve has a longer history as a habitat for plants and wildlife in the region.
The water crossing has become a place where visitors experience an unusual connection to nature. The path sits at eye level with the water, creating a sense of closeness to the natural surroundings that typical cycling routes do not offer.
The path is open year-round and suitable for cyclists, walkers, and runners. Visitors can rent bikes on site or start from signposted junctions 71, 91, and 92 in the area.
From a distance, only the cyclists' heads appear above the water surface, as if they were riding on water. Nearby sits a World War One bunker that is part of an art project where rainwater drips down the wall in a tear-shaped line.
