Openluchtmuseum Bokrijk, Open-air museum and arboretum in Genk, Belgium
Bokrijk is an open-air museum and arboretum in Genk, Belgium, covering 550 hectares of land. The site holds 148 authentic buildings brought from different parts of Flanders and reassembled on the grounds.
The land was once known as Buscurake and passed to Herkenrode Abbey in 1252. Cistercian monks developed farms and fish ponds that remained in use for centuries.
The relocated structures show how rural communities in Flanders lived and worked between the 17th and 19th centuries. Craftspeople in period clothing demonstrate techniques that were once part of everyday life.
The museum opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 between March and November. Guided tours and demonstrations of traditional craft techniques run regularly throughout the day.
The grounds include the largest outdoor playground in Belgium and an arboretum that has grown since 1965. The plant collection covers several hectares and includes species from different climate zones.
