H. Vincent Meredith Residence, National historic residence in Golden Square Mile, Montreal, Canada
The H. Vincent Meredith Residence is a Queen Anne style house located at 1110 des Pins Avenue West in Montreal, Canada. The two-and-a-half-story building features red brick walls, stone ornaments, a conical tower, a steep hipped roof, dormers, and tall chimneys.
The house was built in 1896 for Andrew Allen, owner of the Allen Line Steamship Company, and later became home to Sir Vincent Meredith, president of the Bank of Montreal. This succession of residents links the property to Montreal's most prominent families.
The residence reflects the architectural tastes of Montreal's wealthy merchants and bankers who favored ornate design in their homes. Its decorative brickwork and distinctive tower represent the style preferences that defined the city's most exclusive neighborhood.
The building was restored after a fire in 1990 and now serves as the McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law. Check ahead before visiting since it functions as an active teaching and research facility within the university.
The design combines plain wall surfaces with decorative brickwork concentrated at the eave level, accented by Venetian windows. Some of the original interior decorations from the 1890s survive, offering a glimpse into how residents of that era arranged and decorated their spaces.
