Burano, Residential skyscraper in Bay Street Corridor, Toronto, Canada
Burano is a residential skyscraper in the Bay Street Corridor neighborhood of downtown Toronto, rising 48 floors above street level. The building incorporates the original facade of a 1920s automobile showroom, which remains visible along the street front.
The site was home to a McLaughlin Motor Car Showroom from 1925 until it closed in 2007, after which the land was redeveloped. The original showroom building was demolished to make way for the tower that stands there today.
The atrium features a large abstract fresco by Italian artist Sandro Martini, which greets anyone who steps inside the building. The work fills the entrance hall and gives the space a character that is unusual for a residential tower.
The tower sits in central Toronto and is easy to reach by public transit, with several subway and streetcar stops nearby. The historic facade on the street level can be seen without entering the building, making it accessible to any passerby.
The old showroom facade was fully taken apart and stored off-site during construction, then put back in place once the underground parking levels were complete. This means the facade you see today was reassembled piece by piece after spending years in storage.
