Swiss National Park

The Swiss National Park extends across 170 square kilometers of protected alpine terrain, featuring limestone mountains, dense forests, and alpine meadows between 1400 and 3174 meters.

Established in 1914 through a service agreement, the Swiss National Park became the first national park in the Alps and continues its mission of nature preservation.

The park operates under strict regulations where visitors must stay on marked trails, allowing natural processes to occur without human interference in this living laboratory.

The visitor center in Zernez provides detailed maps, educational exhibits, and guidance for exploring 80 kilometers of maintained hiking trails throughout the protected area.

Research projects conducted since 1920 systematically document the development of animal populations, plant communities, and environmental changes within the park boundaries.
