Hawkins Preserve is a natural preserve south of Cortez featuring sandstone rock formations, juniper woodlands, and multiple hiking trails. The landscape includes several different habitats with varied plant life and geological features throughout.
The land was donated in the 1990s to the Cortez Cultural Center and protected through a conservation agreement. The site was secured to preserve it for future generations and prevent commercial development.
The pueblos left behind by ancient communities show how people lived and built their homes in this region. Walking through the preserve, visitors can still see traces of these earlier residents today.
The preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday, with parking available for vehicles and recreational vehicles at the entrance. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and stick to marked trails, especially over rocky and uneven ground.
A researcher named Lewis Henry Morgan documented ancient cliff dwellings here in 1878 and helped us understand this early building style. His records help visitors today appreciate the significance of what survives at the site.
