Burg Bernegg ZH

Burg Bernegg ZH is a medieval castle ruin perched on a hilltop near Hinwil. The site uses natural defensive features with steep slopes protecting its northern approach.

The Bernegg family first appeared in documents during the 13th century as owners of this fortress. Financial hardship forced them to abandon and dismantle it within decades.

The ruins reflect how medieval lords built fortifications during the regional expansion into forested areas. It shows the architectural approach used to control and settle new territories.

You can reach the ruins by a short walk from the parking area below Girenbad. Marked trails make the site accessible in most weather conditions.

The walls were built from boulder stones, conglomerate, and sandstone blocks reaching 2 meters in thickness. This robust construction was designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate of the region.
