Abbaye Prémontrée du Lac de Joux

Abbaye Prémontrée du Lac de Joux is a monastery complex positioned above the glacial lake with thick stone walls and a bell tower. The buildings are arranged in the traditional pattern of a religious community, with the church at the center and living quarters and work areas surrounding it.

The monastery was established in 1126 and became the first permanent settlement in the Vallée de Joux region. It remained an important center for settlement and development in the valley for many centuries.

The community here followed the Premonstratensian way of life, which combined spiritual contemplation with practical work in the fields and workshops. Today you can see how this blend shaped both the buildings and the surrounding countryside.

The site is open year-round and surrounded by walking trails that provide good views of the location and surroundings. Spring through fall offers the most comfortable visiting conditions, with stable weather and good accessibility to all areas.

The village took its name from the monastery itself, but the area also held an earlier name derived from the nearby Lionne stream. This connection between the religious community and the natural water features shows how deeply the monastery influenced local geography.
