Vallorbe Caves, Natural cave system in Vallorbe, Switzerland
The Vallorbe Caves are a natural cave system in canton Vaud, Switzerland, carved by the River Orbe. Lit passages lead through several large chambers filled with limestone formations shaped over a very long period of time.
The caves were discovered in 1880 by local explorers who were following the underground course of the River Orbe. During the 20th century they were gradually opened to the public and grew into a well-known destination.
The Cathedral is a chamber with a very high ceiling that is sometimes used for concerts inside the rock. The natural acoustics of the stone give music a quality that no ordinary hall can offer.
The temperature inside stays low and constant throughout the year, so bring a warm layer regardless of the season outside. Sturdy shoes are also a good idea as the paths can be damp and uneven in places.
Inside the caves there is a collection of around 250 minerals from across the world displayed in a section called the Fairy Treasure Trove. This brings together rock types not normally found in Switzerland right next to the local limestone formations.
