Red Market, Heritage market building in Santo António, Macau.

The Red Market is a three-story brick building with a central clock tower and corner watchtowers positioned at each end. The red walls and balanced design give the structure a clear presence on the street.

The building was completed in 1936 by architect Júlio Alberto Basto and positioned near the waterfront for direct access to goods from the docks. This placement made it an important hub for the distribution of fresh products throughout the city.

The building shows Portuguese design through its red brick walls and symmetrical form, reflecting how European construction methods shaped Macau's architecture. You can see how this style influenced local markets and public spaces in the city.

The building is divided across three floors with different products on each level: ground floor for vegetables and fruits, second floor for fish, and third floor for meat. Visitors should expect crowded passages and active trading throughout the day.

This is the only wet market building in Macau officially designated as a cultural heritage site, giving it special protected status. The designation shows how traditional trading places are valued as part of the city's cultural identity.
