Memorial Rock, Natural landmark near Dolores, Colorado, United States
Memorial Rock is a massive sandstone boulder sitting beside State Highway 145 near Dolores. The formation emerged from the mountainside above and now rests prominently along the roadway where travelers can easily spot it.
In May 2019, this massive boulder rolled down from the mountainside and blocked Highway 145 with a deep trench. The incident became a turning point in deciding how to handle the road ahead.
Governor Jared Polis designated this geological formation as Memorial Rock, establishing it as an official point of interest for Colorado residents and travelers.
The boulder is easy to spot from State Highway 145 at milepost 21, roughly 11 miles east of Dolores. Drive slowly and watch for the formation as you pass through the area.
Rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to remove it, road officials chose to redirect the highway around the boulder. This practical choice transformed a natural disaster into an enduring roadside attraction.
