Kalangguer Reservoir, reservoir in Xinjiang, China
Kalangguer Reservoir is a water storage body in Tacheng Prefecture, Xinjiang, set among flat plains with low hills in the distance. A dam and sluice gates control the outflow, directing water toward surrounding farmland.
The reservoir was built in the second half of the 20th century as part of a regional water management effort. Its main goals were to secure irrigation for farmland in the dry Tacheng area and to reduce flood risk.
The name Kalangguer comes from a local Turkic language and likely refers to a feature of the surrounding land. Farmers from nearby villages rely on its water to irrigate their fields during the dry growing season.
The reservoir is reachable by local roads and most visitors arrive by car or motorcycle. There are few facilities on site, so bring your own food and water before heading out.
In winter the surface of the reservoir can freeze over completely, turning the open water into a flat expanse of ice. Local people sometimes walk or fish on the frozen surface during the coldest months.
